An important area in School of Engineering research is the use of nanomaterials and bioanalytical microsystems for biosensors, bioseparations, and biomaterials. A second area is imaging, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephlogram (MEG) studies of brain activity. The computational opportunities inspired by and for living systems have created opportunities in understanding nature and in using nature to help with challenges such as computer security and the relationship between information and energy. Other computational activities include molecular dynamics, macromolecular structures, algorithmic development for data mining, 2-D array analysis, and phylogeny.
