Race Car Team Presents at Economic Forum
February 11, 2009
School of Engineering Dean Joseph Cecchi gave a presentation at a meeting of the Economic Forum, a group of New Mexico business leaders, on Tuesday, Feb. 11. With him were members of the UNM LoboMotorSports team. These students are enrolled in a three-semester, for-credit course culminating in the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) competition, the largest international engineering competition in the world. FSAE challenges engineering students to design, build and race a formula style racecar in one year.
UNM Formula SAE emphasizes core engineering skills like systems engineering, computer aided design, project management and teamwork. Aside from the basic and advanced engineering principles applied in race car design, students also gain experience with management, financial and accounting practices, and marketing.
Local and national engineering firms are well aware of the experience gained by UNM Formula SAE students. Sandia National Labs, Johnson & Johnson, Answer Racing, General Electric, Ford Motor Co., Honda R&D Americas and Technip, USA have all recruited UNM Formula SAE graduates. Many students also continue in academia and perform cutting-edge, graduate level research. The success of program graduates shows the positive impact of having systems engineering experience in a realistic industrial environment.
