From the Dean
From planes, trains and automobiles to video games, cell phones and the Internet, engineers and computer scientists have revolutionalized the way we live and work.
If you are interested in science, math and computers, if you enjoy solving problems, and if you would like to make a difference in technology, industry, health or communications, engineering or computer science can be a fun, fulfilling and financially rewarding career. And if you are interested in pursuing these fields, I highly recommend the University of New Mexico School of Engineering.
Learning
The UNM School of Engineering offers nine accredited undergraduate programs and graduate degrees in ten disciplines. With 100 faculty members and 1500 students, the School has achieved a reputation of offering excellent academic programs in a research-intensive environment. Students have opportunities to integrate what they have learned, exercise their creativity, and participate in national competitions in designing, building, testing and analyzing projects as diverse as a steel bridge, a formula-style racecar, and motorized robots.
Discovering, Collaborating and Contributing
There is a close relationship between the excellence of our academic programs and the cutting-edge research being done at UNM. Undergraduate students as well as graduate students work side-by-side with faculty on life-enhancing sponsored research. Collaborations with industry, government agencies and laboratories, and other academic institutions result in using nanotechnology to design materials to find better, renewable sources of energy through fuel cell technology and researching ways to develop new sources of water, reuse existing water sources, and improve water quality for communities.
Our New Facility
Ground-breaking for our new Centennial Engineering Center was held in October, 2006. This 158,000 square foot facility will increase space for the School of Engineering by more than thirty percent, expanding our capacity for innovation, technology, and improvements to our quality of life, and contribute to the nation's competitive position in the new global economy with state-of-the-art research capabilities.
In Closing
I encourage you to learn more about us by visiting the School in person, when you can meet our faculty and students, go on tours of our labs, and see how we are involved in learning, discovering, collaborating, and contributing.
