About the School of Engineering

Founded in 1906, the School of Engineering offers outstanding engineering and computer science education to students at the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral levels, awarding over 400 total degrees annually. Our interactive educational approach involves students with nationally prominent faculty and professional engineers from industry.

UNM's School of Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). UNM is frequently listed among the top 50 engineering schools in the United States. Some of the brightest and hardest-working engineering and computer professionals in the U.S. graduate from the School of Engineering.

UNM students in engineering and computer science study with experts in their fields, conduct cutting-edge research, and collaborate with innovators from academia, the national labs, and the private sector.

The UNM School of Engineering is ranked #14 for Engineering Graduate Programs by Princeton Review and #5 for Best Schools for Hispanics by Hispanic Business.

The University of New Mexico-Albuquerque is the only Hispanic-serving institution in the U.S. that is also classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research University with Very High Research Activity.

Exceptional Academics

The UNM School of Engineering instills technical know how and creative thinking while emphasizing the newest engineering techniques and theories. Students study scientific principles, develop problem solving skills, and learn how apply their creativity to engineering. SOE courses also hone communication, writing, and presentation skills, and stress social responsibility in the use of technology. Classes in the humanities and social studies complement technical courses. Students are also encouraged to explore their interested by taking electives in any of UNM’s colleges. The result? Talented, well-rounded, creative engineers.

The SOE has five departments:

  • Chemical and Nuclear Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Dedicated Faculty

The School of Engineering's nationally prominent faculty includes professional engineers from industry who provide a healthy and stimulating exposure to ideas and philosophies. The School encourages as much interaction as possible between students and faculty members through small classes and academic advising by faculty members.

Cutting-Edge Research

According to The Princeton Review, the University of New Mexico has consistently established itself as a leader in research and entrepreneurial spirit, ranking with the top 25 entrepreneurial schools. One reason for this is the collaborative work by faculty, staff and students to create, apply, and disseminate knowledge that advances our understanding of the technological world and contributes important new ideas and innovations to society.

Current research at the UNM School of Engineering is as varied as the number of engineering fields: nanotechnology, biomedicine, environmental restoration and rehabilitation, national security, computer information technology, robotics and many more.

Faculty and students work side by side in research projects, including:

  • removal of arsenic in water
  • preservation and restoration of the Rio Grande
  • intelligent robot navigation
  • solar energy
  • cancer research with the UNM School of Medicine

The School's eight affiliated research centers enjoy international reputations and serve as catalysts for collaborate research with clients in the public and private sector.

Collaborations with Industry

Students at the School of Engineering have immediate and regular contact with leading local and international companies through internships, co-ops, and research or design projects.

Collaborations with leaders in the engineering industry as well as local leaders support advancement of research as well as economic stability for Albuquerque, the state, and the nation.

Student Opportunities

All major professional engineering and honor societies have student chapters at UNM, which provide both technical and social activities. Departmental and other scholarships are available to students needing financial aid. Local industries as well as each department frequently have part-time jobs where students can supplement their finances and gain academic and practical experience.

Engineering Student Services

Engineering undergraduates receive academic and career support, skill development and recognition from the staff in Engineering Student Services . This program provides support to undergraduate engineering students to assist in their transition to college. The School of Engineering is the only college at UNM that directly admits qualified beginning freshmen.

There are almost 2000 women enrolled in UNM's engineering, science and math programs. The Women in Science and Engineering Program (WISE) helps them access workshops, job shadowing, and mentoring, as well as opportunities to volunteer and socialize.

Multicultural Engineering Program

UNM's student body and the demographics of the School of Engineering reflect diversity. The Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) is designed to support students from diverse heritages to excel. Free mentoring services, one-on-one advising, special scholarship opportunities, professional development workshops, and a computer lab are available.

According to Pedro Ramos, a Mechanical Engineering graduate at the School of Engineering, "The biggest benefit to being involved with MEP is the sense of family you get. The staff was very concerned about our success and they went out of their way to help us achieve our goals."
